Sun Spots, Garden Gloves & Gravity

After decades of gardening, I finally decided to do something about my sun spots, crepey skin, and aging skin after 50. Join the journey.

Sun Spots, Garden Gloves & Gravity

After decades of gardening, raising kids, chasing sunshine, and spending more time outdoors than in, I recently noticed something I couldn't ignore anymore.

A couple of sun spots on my legs.

At first, I did what most women do. I stared at them. Then I ignored them. Then I stared at them again.

But those little spots sent me down a rabbit hole that had me taking a closer look at my skin than I have in years. Before long, I was noticing the sun spots on my chest, the crepey skin above my knees, and a few other reminders that gravity has apparently been working overtime while I wasn't paying attention.

So I've decided to do something about it, and I'm bringing you along for the journey.

The Skin Changes Nobody Warned Me About

I expected wrinkles someday.

What I didn't expect was looking down and realizing the skin above my knees had apparently entered retirement without notifying me first.

And don't even get me started on gravity.

Somewhere around fifty, I discovered that gravity has a work ethic I simply cannot compete with.

The reality is that as we age, our skin naturally produces less collagen and elastin. These are the building blocks that help skin stay firm, smooth, and resilient.

Years of sun exposure can speed up that process, especially in areas that often get overlooked:

  • Chest and décolletage
  • Above the knees
  • Arms
  • Hands
  • Shoulders
  • Legs

For many of us, these areas spent decades soaking up sunshine while sunscreen focused mostly on our faces.

Why Those Sun-Kissed Summers Catch Up With Us

I grew up in an era when a tan was considered healthy.

The deeper the tan, the better.

No one was talking about UV damage, collagen loss, pigmentation, or skin cancer prevention the way we do today.

If I could go back and give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be simple:

Wear the sunscreen.

Not because I regret all those summers spent outdoors.

I don't.

Some of my favorite memories were made outside.

Gardening.

Watching my kids play.

Family vacations.

Long afternoons soaking up sunshine.

I wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

I just wish I had protected my skin a little better while making them.

The Areas I Started Noticing First

The first thing I noticed were a couple of dark spots on my legs.

Then I started paying attention to other areas.

The tiny sun spots across my chest suddenly seemed more noticeable than they had before. The skin above my knees looked thinner and a little crepey. Even my hands carried reminders of years spent gardening, driving, and enjoying life outdoors.

The funny thing is that none of these changes happened overnight.

They appeared gradually over time.

I simply became aware of them all at once.

That's often how aging works. The changes happen slowly until one day we stop long enough to notice.

My Simple Over-50 Skin Care Experiment

Rather than complaining about it, I've decided to do something about it.

Starting today, (or when my Amazon order arrives LOL) I'm testing a simple skincare routine focused on improving the appearance of sun spots, uneven skin tone, and crepey skin.

Nothing complicated.

Nothing that requires a second mortgage.

Just consistency.

Morning Routine

Evening Routine

That's it.

No twelve-step skincare routine because who has time for that?

No expensive spa treatments.

Just a simple plan and a little patience.

What I'm Hoping to Improve

My goal isn't perfection.

I'm not trying to look twenty-five again.

Frankly, twenty-five-year-old me made some questionable decisions anyway.

What I do want is healthier-looking skin.

I'm hoping to improve:

  • The appearance of sun spots on my legs
  • Discoloration on my chest
  • Crepey skin above my knees
  • Overall skin texture and hydration
  • Skin tone and brightness

If I can achieve that while continuing to enjoy life outdoors, I'll call it a win.

Come Along for the Journey

One thing I've learned over the years is that most worthwhile changes happen slowly.

Gardens don't grow overnight.

Vanilla extract doesn't mature overnight.

And healthy skin doesn't improve overnight either.

I've taken photos of the areas I'm treating and plan to document my progress along the way.

Will it work?

I honestly don't know yet.

But I'm excited to find out.

I'll be sharing updates here over the next few months so we can see together whether this simple routine makes a noticeable difference.

If you've been noticing sun spots, crepey skin, or some of those little reminders that time keeps marching forward, you're certainly not alone.

Maybe it's never too late to start taking care of the skin we're in.

And if nothing else, perhaps we can all agree on one thing:

Twenty-year-old us should have listened about the sunscreen.

But then again, twenty-year-old us probably wouldn't have listened anyway. 😄

P.S. I've taken my before photos and officially started my little skincare experiment. Check back in a few months and we'll see if these sun-kissed farm girl legs can learn a few new tricks.
